The Man and Biosphere Programme, also known as MaB by its abbreviations in English (Man and Biosphere), arose in the Intergubernamental Conference of experts for the rational use and the conservation of biosphere resources, organized by UNESCO in September of 1968.

The Reserve is located in the northeastern part of the Community of Madrid, between the 900 and the 2.047 ms of altitude, and include the municipalities of Horcajuelo de la Sierra, Montejo de la Sierra, Prádena del Rincón, Puebla de la Sierra and La Hiruela.
