EL HAYEDO DE MONTEJO
From the Resources Centre of Montejo de la Sierra, where entrance passes are facilitated (Telephone: 91 869 70 58/91 869 72 17) the guided visit to the Hayedo de Montejo, natural space declared Natural Site of National Interest in 1974, begins.
This forest, with 222 hectares of extension and located between the 1200 and 1600 m of altitude, shows in its interior the only beechs reserve of the Community of Madrid, being, in addition, one of the most southern ones in Europe.
The beech forest is an unusual place in the Community of Madrid. It is delimited in its low part by Jarama river, natural limit in this zone of the communities of Madrid and Castilla – La Mancha; on its riverside, heathers, birches, rowan mountain ashs, etc. grow and, on slopes, beechs, oaks, pyrenean oaks and holly are always mixed.
The autumn is the season in which the beech forest presents many colours, predominating ocher, yellow and golden tones, although a walk in its interior during any time of the year is forced for everyone who do not want to lose a unique scene.
The visits are limited by a daily visitor’s quota, reason why it is convenient to make the reserves with sufficient advance. |
