Most of the mills were private, although some belonged to the council or institutions, like associations or hospitals. They were located in the most favourable places to use the water current force. Due to they depended on the volume, the located ones in Jarama river were working all the year, whereas the located ones in the low part of the village stopped in summer, to destine the water to vegetable gardens irrigation. Autumn and Spring were periods with more work due to the harvest was recent and they has new grains to grind.


The oldest mills of the zone are those of Montejo (XVI century), being able to see nowadays one next to La Mata river, while the rest ones date from XVIII century. In La Hiruela, next to Jarama River, a perfectly recovered mill can be visited.
