ECOSYSTEMS. OTHER FORESTS (BEECH GROVES, ASH TREE GROVES AND HOLM OAK GROVES)
The Hayedo de Montejo is located in the shade of the high valley of Jarama river and it is characterized for appearing accompanied by oaks circles (Quercus petraea petraea) that present a remarkable progressive dynamism, as well as other species of vegetal accompaniment like birch or holly (Betula alba, llex aquifolium). The abandonment of agricultural and livestock farming uses has caused scrubs and forest species advance, being at the present time in a stage of natural recolonization.

Although the holm oak appears in a much dispersed form around Sierra del Rincón, is in the sunny spot of the Valtejoso valley, in Puebla de la Sierra, where the biggest holm oak grove is located. This forest was exploited to obtain firewoods and coal during centuries and was left later, displaying at the present time a shrubing appearance with scarce new trees in the lowest layers.
The beech grove existing in Sierra del Rincón, in Montejo de la Sierra, is a protected natural space of the Community of Madrid with the figure of “Natural Site of National Interest” with great recreational, educative and scientific values, of great environmental value, because numerous protected species as beech, rowan mountain ash, birch, yew tree or cherry tree, among others, appear in this vegetal grouping. It has beautiful and singular landscaping characteristics, as well as an enormous value as relic ecosystem.
