MUNICIPALITIES. LA HIRUELA
Located to 105 km from Madrid, it is placed in the northwest limit of the Community of Madrid with the province of Guadalajara, to 1257 m. of altitude, located between hills in the Alto de Bañaderos slope on the Jarama river valley.
The municipality respects the traditional architecture conditioned by the severity of winters, with slate constructions, that is arranged in a simple urban plot, defined by two main streets that come together in the church square.

The water currents are abundant in La Hiruela and this circumstance can be one of the origins of its name, coming from the word “hijuela”. Another one could be the one that makes reference to the cattle routes that cross the municipality.
The municipality is flanked by mounts, as Pico de Bañaderos, Morra de la Dehesa, Cabeza del Burrial or El Porrejón.
This topography allows to make different excursions by routes and footpaths with different degree of difficulty, always surrounded by oak groves, meadows and scrubs. Fauna abundance makes that a great part of its municipality is including in the National Reserve of Hunting of Sonsaz.
