UNESCO approved, in the meeting of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and Biosphere Programme (MaB), celebrated between 27 and 29 of June of 2005, the declaration of Sierra del Rincón as Biosphere Reserve.

It was designated Biosphere Reserve due to its great landscaping richness, its Mediterranean ecosystems representativeness and its model of biodiversity conservation and application of sustainable development activities that are developed in it.
