One of the main characteristics of the MaB Programme is the importance of the work in network. For that reason, Biosphere Reserves are integrated in a World Network, composed by 531 sites distributed in 105 countries, which constitutes an instrument for the biological diversity conservation.
Although Biosphere Reserves imply different geographic, economic and cultural contexts, they have in common the search of specific solutions to conciliate the biological diversity conservation with the sustainable use of natural resources in benefit of local populations.
The World Network of Biosphere Reserves promotes the information exchange among local populations and facilitates activities of cooperation, research, environmental education and specialized qualification. The World Network is structured as well in regional, subregional or thematic networks.
